the monitor top refrigerator

Description
Dedicated to the Memory of Mike Arnold, 20th Century Restorations (1945-2007). "Makes It Safe To Be Hungry" was the advertising slogan. Here's a series of images of G.E.'s revolutionary electric refrigeration machine that they began marketing in 1927. The motor was hermetically sealed and had no fans, belts, or flames to make it reliable. The original refrigerant was the toxic sulfur dioxide, which ran through the copper coils. Because of its resemblance to the Civil War era submarine, it was almost immediately nicknamed the "Monitor Top." The majority of pages here are from The New Yorker, 1928-1932. Other magazines used: House and Garden, Hearst's Magazine, Saturday Evening Post. The voice singing is Jack Whiting.
